Rich & Hayley's Wedding at the Priory Church of Saint Bartholomew the Great, London

Rich and Hayley tied the knot at the Priory Church of Saint Bartholomew the Great adjacent to Smithfield Market in London. “St Barts” is London's oldest church with its history dating back to 1123. Quite a few Hollywood stars have visited St Bartholomew's as its been used as a set for numerous movies, including Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes and Four Weddings and a Funeral. This was my first time photographing a wedding at the Priory Church of Saint Bartholomew the Great and will stay in my memory for a very long time. St bartholomew the great wedding London 2

Rich and Hayley had a very intimate service with immediate family and close friends. St. Bart's Church itself is nothing short of stunning! However this jaw-dropping beauty does come at a cost: it's VERY dark. When I say dark, I mean that Saint Bartholomew's is by far the darkest location I have shot in some time if not the darkest ever. This throws up a lot of challenges for wedding photographers, especially when no flash is allowed. Picking on my years of experience and using every tool from the photographer's tool case I think the results are well, fantastic!

The original plan was to have all of the photos in black & white, this was Rich and Hayley's preference. Hayley especially wanted a Romeo and Juliet feel to the images with a softness that complimented the amazing look of St. Bart's Church. I however edited a selection in colour and sent them to Rich and Hayley, just to see if they indeed still want all black & white after seeing the alternative. They were both in agreement that the colour images worked very well and so we ended up with a mixture as can be seen in the photos below.

This wedding took place in December and was getting dark before the service started, by the time it had concluded we were shooting the family group photos in seriously failing light. The bride and groom shots you see below were shot in darkness, no ambient light to talk off apart from the odd street light, very challenging but also extremely rewarding when the photos look the way they do.

Thanks again to Rich and Hayley for sharing their big day with us and having a wedding that I will remember for a very long time. Please view the full gallery.
